Updating UMD's Strategic Pathway
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) created a pathway that aligns with UMD’s mission, vision, and values and the five imperatives of the University of Minnesota strategic roadmap, Elevate Extraordinary 2030.
A Strategic Pathway Committee of UMD students, staff, and faculty from many campus locations guided our efforts. This committee gathered and analyzed feedback to inform a new strategic pathway.
All members of the campus community were invited to contribute their views and offer advice on key pathway ideas. External stakeholders in the Duluth community and region were also invited to provide their insights and suggestions.
During the 2024-25 academic year, Chancellor Nies and Provost Ropers participated in small group and campus-wide discussions to collaboratively refine the values, mission, and vision of UMD’s community. Informed by these conversations, they presented a revised mission, vision, and values statement to the University Coordinating Council on October 28, 2025, which endorsed their use for the strategic planning process. Conversations throughout the 25-26 academic year further refined the elements and they were formally approved on September 30, 2026.
